Molíns de Rey: History and Culture

Molíns de Rey has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The town’s name originates from the “Royal Mills” that were established by the Crown of Aragon in the 12th century to take advantage of the Llobregat River’s flow for producing flour. Over the centuries, Molíns de Rey developed into an agricultural hub and later became an important industrial town in the 19th century during Catalonia’s industrial boom.

The town is proud of its traditions and culture, hosting several festivals throughout the year. The most prominent of these is the Fira de la Candelera, one of Catalonia’s oldest fairs, which takes place annually in early February. This vibrant event celebrates agriculture, crafts, and commerce, attracting visitors from all over the region with exhibitions, concerts, and lively parades.

Cultural life in Molíns de Rey is deeply rooted in Catalonian traditions, with many community events and celebrations marking the calendar, including the annual Sant Jordi Day, where the town’s streets fill with book and flower stalls.
