Sama: Economy and Key Industries

Historically, Sama’s economy was driven by coal mining, which transformed the area into an industrial powerhouse during the 19th and 20th centuries. While mining has declined over the years, the city has successfully transitioned into a service-based economy, with growing sectors in tourism, retail, and local crafts. Industrial heritage tourism is becoming increasingly popular, drawing visitors interested in learning about the region’s mining past.

Sama is also known for its agricultural products, especially cider, a beloved Asturian beverage. The surrounding countryside is dotted with apple orchards, and cider houses (sidrerías) are central to the local economy. Additionally, small-scale manufacturing, particularly in textiles and food products, still plays a role in the city’s economy.

The city’s strategic location within Asturias also makes it a hub for commerce and transport, connecting the more rural areas with larger cities like Oviedo and Gijón.
