San Celoni: History and Culture

San Celoni has a rich history that dates back to Roman times, though its modern development began in the Middle Ages. The town was an important stop on the road connecting Barcelona with the French border, and its strategic location contributed to its growth during the medieval period. The influence of Romanesque and Gothic architecture is still visible in many of the town’s buildings.

The town has a vibrant cultural life, with numerous local festivals celebrating Catalonian traditions. One of the most important is the Festa Major, which takes place in September. This festival features traditional Catalan music, dancing, and the famous “correfoc,” a fire run where participants dressed as devils parade through the streets with fireworks. Other notable cultural events include the Sant Jordi Day, celebrating the patron saint of Catalonia with book and rose fairs, and the Carnival, with colorful parades and costumes.

Local customs are strongly rooted in Catalonian identity, with an emphasis on preserving the Catalan language and traditional arts, including Sardana dances and Castells (human towers), which are often showcased during festivals.
