Sóller: History and Culture

Sóller has a rich history that dates back to the time of the Romans, but it was the Moors who left a lasting influence on the region, particularly in terms of agricultural techniques. The town flourished in the 19th century when it became a major hub for the export of citrus fruits, especially oranges, to France. This trade boom led to an influx of wealth, which is reflected in the town’s grand architecture, much of which has French influences.

Today, Sóller is known for its deep-rooted traditions and vibrant festivals, most notably the annual “Fira i Festes de Sóller,” a week-long celebration that commemorates the historic battle of the Christians against pirate invaders. The reenactments, colorful parades, and festive atmosphere during this time bring the whole town together, making it a fantastic time for visitors to experience the local culture.

Other cultural highlights include the weekly Saturday market, where locals sell fresh produce, crafts, and other goods. Visitors can also explore Sóller’s artistic heritage at the Can Prunera Modernist Museum, which showcases works from both local and international artists.
