Huércal-Overa: Local Cuisine

Huércal-Overa’s cuisine is quintessentially Andalusian, featuring a variety of locally sourced ingredients and traditional recipes. One of the town’s signature dishes is gurullos, a type of handmade pasta often served with rabbit or game meats. Olive oil, produced in the surrounding region, plays a key role in many dishes, including the famous gazpacho and ajoblanco, two refreshing cold soups perfect for the hot summers.

Visitors should also try migas, a hearty dish made from fried bread crumbs, typically served with sausages or fried eggs. Local seafood, such as grilled sardines or squid, is easily found in nearby coastal towns but also features on the menus of Huércal-Overa’s restaurants. For dessert, the town is known for turrón, a nougat-like sweet made from almonds, which is especially popular during the holidays.

The town offers a selection of traditional restaurants and tapas bars, where visitors can enjoy these dishes, as well as local wines and sherries from nearby vineyards. Food festivals, including those held during the annual fair, allow visitors to taste a variety of local specialties.
