San Roque: History and Culture

San Roque’s history is deeply intertwined with the nearby British overseas territory of Gibraltar. Founded by the Spanish in the early 18th century after the capture of Gibraltar by the British, San Roque became a haven for displaced Gibraltarians. The city is proud of its heritage, and you can see remnants of Roman, Moorish, and Christian influences throughout its architecture and culture.

One of the city’s most significant cultural events is the Holy Week (Semana Santa) celebrations, where traditional processions with religious floats wind through the streets. Another important festival is the Feria Real de San Roque, held every August, where locals and visitors celebrate with flamenco dancing, food, and music, offering a deep dive into Andalusian culture.

San Roque is also home to some important historical landmarks, such as the Church of Santa María la Coronada and the Carteia Archaeological Site, which showcases remains from the Roman era. These sites, along with the city’s museums and cultural venues, provide a rich cultural experience for visitors.
