Hernani: Local Cuisine

As with many Basque towns, Hernani takes great pride in its cuisine. The region is world-famous for its culinary traditions, and Hernani is no exception. The town offers a range of delicious local dishes that reflect the rich agricultural and fishing traditions of the Basque Country. One of the most beloved dishes is “pintxos,” small, bite-sized snacks often served with drinks at bars, which are a staple of social life here.

Traditional Basque dishes like “bacalao a la vizcaína” (salt cod in red pepper sauce), “txuleta” (grilled rib-eye steak), and “alubias de Tolosa” (Tolosa beans stew) can be found in many of the town’s restaurants. Seafood is also a significant part of the local cuisine, with fresh fish and shellfish being central to many dishes.

For drinks, Hernani is known for its “txakoli,” a slightly sparkling, dry white wine that pairs perfectly with the region’s seafood. Local cider houses are another popular spot for both locals and tourists, where visitors can enjoy “sagardoa,” a traditional Basque cider, often accompanied by hearty local fare. Many restaurants and cider houses offer tasting menus and seasonal specialties, making Hernani an excellent destination for food lovers.
