Igualada: History and Culture

Igualada’s history stretches back to medieval times, though its origins can be traced to even earlier Roman and Visigothic settlements in the region. Throughout the Middle Ages, Igualada grew as a market town, benefiting from its strategic location between Barcelona and other inland cities. Over time, it became known for its leather and textile industries, which were vital to its economic development during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Culturally, Igualada is rich in Catalonian traditions. One of its most famous annual celebrations is the “Festa Major,” held in August, which fills the city with parades, music, fireworks, and traditional Catalan “castells” (human towers). The city’s local theater and musical performances are renowned throughout the region, reflecting the vibrant cultural scene.

The city also takes pride in its leather crafting heritage, and visitors can explore the history of this industry at the Igualada Leather Museum (Museu de la Pell). The museum not only offers insight into the city’s artisanal craftsmanship but also serves as a venue for cultural exhibitions and events, keeping Igualada’s heritage alive.
