Oviedo: Local Cuisine

Oviedo is a food lover’s paradise, known for its hearty Asturian cuisine. The city’s most iconic dish is fabada asturiana, a rich and flavorful bean stew made with chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), and pork shoulder. This dish is best enjoyed with a glass of Asturian cider, known locally as sidra, which is poured from a height to aerate the drink and release its flavors. Oviedo’s many cider houses, known as sidrerías, are perfect places to enjoy a traditional meal paired with this beloved local drink.

Other local specialties include cachopo, a dish consisting of two large breaded veal fillets stuffed with ham and cheese, and queso de Cabrales, a strong blue cheese produced in the nearby mountains. For those with a sweet tooth, Oviedo offers carbayones, a delicious almond pastry soaked in syrup, which is a must-try for any visitor.

Visitors can experience local flavors at a range of restaurants, from casual sidrerías to Michelin-starred establishments. The city is also home to vibrant food markets, such as El Fontán Market, where locals shop for fresh produce, meats, and cheeses.
