Bétera’s history stretches back thousands of years, with evidence of Roman settlement in the area. During the Middle Ages, the town came under Moorish control, like much of the Iberian Peninsula, before being reconquered by Christian forces in the 13th century. This blend of Roman, Moorish, and Christian influences is still visible in the town’s architecture and cultural heritage today.
The town is famous for its vibrant festivals, particularly the Fiestas de Agosto, held each August in honor of the Virgen de la Asunción. This festival is a highlight of the year, featuring parades, fireworks, traditional dances, and the construction of alfábegues (giant basil plants). Another important event is La Cordà de Bétera, a unique firework display where participants engage in a controlled pyrotechnic spectacle, an integral part of Valencian culture.
Traditional customs, including the falla celebrations and other regional festivals, offer visitors a deep dive into the town’s cultural heart. Historical landmarks, such as the Castillo de Bétera, add to the rich heritage that the city has to offer.
